Lab Instructions:

Description:

Payroll is an important activity within a firm.  Everyone wants to be paid for their work!  In this firm, employees are paid on a weekly basis and everyone is an hourly employee.  Write a program that processes employee data (name, hours worked, pay rate) from an Excel spreadsheet and add that processed payments for the employees to the spreadsheet.  In addition, your program should be able to process any number of employees and their pay (while we are providing you with a test file, the file that is used by the grader to evaluate your code may have more or less records in it).  Your program should be able to read data from the spreadsheet and allow for a processed pay amount to be created/added to that spreadsheet for the employee based on the results of processing the payroll.

Some general ideas about the program:

  • Your program must process the data to be found in an Excel spreadsheet that will be on the TA’s computer and stored in the following spreadsheet file: C:\MGMT28800\payroll.xlsx (pay special attention to the path and the spelling so that your program will run correctly).

  • You do not know how many employees will be in the spreadsheet, so your code will need to be able to figure that out to process the spreadsheet successfully.

  • You must use a function (with arguments and a return) to calculate the pay for the period and you must pass it the rate and hours worked and receive the employee’s pay for the period.

  • Employees can be paid overtime pay. The overtime rate is 150% of their rate for each hour they work in excess of 40 hours.  No employee can work more than 80 hours.  As such, your code must look for this issue and print a message that Indicates the employee’s name and that they have an hour violation (e.g., “Bob Smith has more than 80 hours worked”).  You may use any way of accomplishing this that you have learned this semester, provided that it is efficient/effective.  In addition to the error message being written to the console (screen), you should add the word “Error” to the field where you would have stored the calculated pay in the spreadsheet.  Otherwise, if payment can be calculated correctly, then you should write the calculated payment amount to the spreadsheet (hint: this will be in a new field on the same row as the other employee data).

  • The final output for the assignment will be the updated C:\MGMT28800\payroll.xlsx file that contains the original data PLUS the calculated pay for each employee based on the hours and rate found in the rates and hours fields (the calculated pay will be a new field added to the Excel spreadsheet on the row corresponding to the employee) as well as the displayed/printed console of error messages for employees with more than 80 hours.

  • this instruction will result in the loss of 10% on the assignment.
