Double $31 million Massachusetts Mega Millions jackpot win is just the 2nd in history

Only twice in the game's history has a jackpot prize been won twice in three draws in the same state—both of Massachusetts' back-to-back $31 million Mega Millions jackpot wins.

On Tuesday, January 24, Belchertown, Massachusetts, became the first location to claim a $31 million Mega Millions prize. The Stop & Shop where the winning ticket was purchased.

The Mega Millions jackpot dropped back to $20 million for the following drawing on January 27 following the Massachusetts victory of $31 million.

Then, on January 31, a winning Mega Millions ticket worth the $31 million jackpot was sold at the Gibbs gas station in Woburn, making it the second time that day that a Massachusetts State Lottery player had struck it rich.

The Massachusetts State Lottery reports that it has been more than 20 years since there were two jackpot winners from the same lottery in the same state.

The last time it occurred, a $28 million Mega Millions jackpot was won in Illinois on May 17, 2002, followed by a $12 million jackpot on May 24, 2002.

The two jackpots won in 2002 also occurred to be the first two to be won following the game's name change from The Big Game to Mega Millions.

The two $31 million Mega Millions jackpot prizes were the two biggest lottery winnings in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts so far in 2023.

Every Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m., Mega Millions drawings take place. Tickets cost $2 apiece.

Lottery players must buy a $2 ticket with six numbers to play Mega Millions.
